Marathi film Sairat, directed by Nagraj Manjule and starring Akash Thosar & Rinku Rajguru has been loved by one and all across Maharashtra especially in Mumbai, but it seems that it has run into some controversy too. The film, which revolves around the love story of a boy (Akash) from the Paradhi community with a girl (Rinku) belonging to the dominant Maratha community, has irked a few Marathi groups. They feel that their caste has been portrayed badly in the movie.
Sairat shows the love story of the two characters, but it ends with caste prejudices overpowering impracticability of passion. The film has also touched the reality of honour killings in Maharashtra due to casteism. This has not gone down well with some Marathi outfits and religious parties and they are set to oppose the film.
In the meanwhile, Sairat is running housefull in most of the 800 screens it’s being showcased at. The film has already created box office records after opening very well at the domestic box office. Sairat (Rs 12.10 crore) overtook Nana Patekar’s Natsamrat (Rs 10 crore) and Riteish Deshmukh’s Lai Bhaari (Rs 10.55 crore), to become the highest opener at the domestic box office. Rinku Rajguru also bagged her first National Award special mention for this movie.
In his written complaint, the director alleged that the censor copy of the film, “Sairat,” was leaked before its theatrical release. Manjule, who has also produced the film, said that the censor board approved copy was uploaded on YouTube.
“Manjule, along with two other producers Nitin Keni and Nikhil Sane on Tuesday complained that two days prior to release the movie print has been leaked for piracy. We are investigating the matter and will engage the cyber police to probe the case from all the angles to trace the accused,” Kulkarni told DNA.
“We also need to find out whether this is a technical mistake or was deliberately done by someone. Very soon we shall come up with a conclusion and nab the accused. The complainant has considered this as a big financial loss done to him as well his production,” he added.
According to sources, the producer and director of Sairat , Nagraj Manjule, approached the police with his complaint earlier this week.
“A high quality version of the movie has been leaked on at least three different websites. The quality indicates that it was done by someone with access to a studio print of the movie,” a source said.
The Cyber police have started the process of tracing the Internet Protocol address from which the movie was uploaded on the internet, and is also gathering information about all such people who might have had access to a high quality print of the movie.
“Sairat,” a well-received and well-loved film, features Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar in the lead roles. The film has created a storm at the box office with its opening weekend collection.
Meanwhile, this is the second Marathi film of this year that got leaked online. Earlier, Nana Patekar’s critically acclaimed film “Natsamrat” was leaked online and the producers had registered a complained with a cyber police station regarding the same.
